Historia del Congreso Internacional de Preservación de Semen Porcino (ICBSP)
La International Conference on Boar Semen Preservation (ICBSP) se organiza periódicamente desde 1985. Esta es la décima edición del congreso, después de nueve encuentros previos celebrados en Europa, Norteamérica y Australia. Durante todos estos años, el principal interés de esta Conferencia ha sido la conservación del semen porcino y su utilización para la inseminación artificial, así como el fomento de la colaboración entre los científicos y el sector empresarial. Entre los temas que se han tratado se incluyen la conservación del semen refrigerado, la criopreservación espermática, el control sanitario del semen, la composición de los medios de conservación seminal (incluida la eliminación de los antibióticos), la optimización de la inseminación artificial (IA poscervical, IA a tiempo fijo,…), el bienestar animal… A continuación, se exponen, brevemente, los aspectos más relevantes de la historia de la International Conference on Boar Semen Preservation.
Los inicios
La primera edición de la conferencia se organizó en la década de 1980, en medio de un interés creciente por la utilización de la inseminación artificial en la producción porcina; aun así, se hacía mayor énfasis en la hembra que en el macho y el semen (Johnson; Reprod Domest Anim 2011;46 Suppl 2:35-38). Durante aquellos años, se produjo un incremento en el porcentaje de explotaciones porcinas que utilizaban la inseminación artificial para la producción ganadera, si bien esta técnica no se utilizaba tanto como en el caso del vacuno. El principal tema de la primera conferencia fue la criopreservación espermática, dadas las posibilidades que surgieron con el descubrimiento del glicerol como agente crioprotector por parte de Christopher Polge en 1959 y los progresos realizados por su grupo de investigación en el Reino Unido durante la década de 1970. A pesar de que el uso del glicerol como agente crioprotector se extendió rápidamente en otros países de Europa y América, la criopreservación espermática en la especie porcina, a diferencia de lo que sucede en la bovina, no se utilizaba, ni se utiliza, de manera rutinaria.
En el nacimiento de la ICBSP tuvieron un papel muy destacado tanto Larry Johnson, un investigador americano que trabajaba en el Departamento de Agricultura de los Estados Unidos, cuanto Kjell Larsson, que era profesor de la Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU). Ambos pensaron, durante el transcurso de la conferencia de la International Pig Veterinary Society (IPVS) en Gante (Bélgica) en 1984, que sería buena idea organizar un congreso que estuviera exclusivamente centrado en la criopreservación del espermatozoide porcino. La primera conferencia se celebró a Uppsala (Suecia) en agosto de 1985, duró tres días y reunió 50 investigadores de 15 países diferentes. Desde entonces, las conferencias siempre han durado tres días y se han programado en agosto (normalmente cada cuatro años). Un motivo de atención durante este primer congreso fue la baja capacidad fecundante de los espermatozoides congelados-descongelados dado que las tasas de fertilidad conseguidas hasta aquel momento parecían haber alcanzado su máximo. Por este motivo, el título que se le dio a esta primera conferencia fue ‘First International Conference donde Deep Freezing of Boar Semen’. La conferencia abordó, mediante cinco sesiones diferentes, tanto aspectos de ciencia básica como aplicada, puesto que no solo se abordó la espermatogénesis, la estructura y función de los espermatozoides o su criotolerancia, sino que también se expusieron los avances más destacados en cuanto a los protocolos de criopreservación, la evaluación in vitro de la calidad y la fertilidad de los espermatozoides, y distintos aspectos prácticos de la comercialización del semen congelado.
La evolución del congreso
Una vez concluida la primera edición del congreso, sus organizadores consideraron la posibilidad de extender los temas a tratar, de forma que decidieron incluir tanto la conservación del semen refrigerado como la inseminación artificial y la gestión de los centros de producción de dosis seminales. Por este motivo, el nombre de la conferencia cambió al actual de International Conference on Boar Semen Preservation y se estableció su carácter cuatrienal. La segunda conferencia, en la cual se homenajeó al malogrado Kjell Larsson – cofundador de lo ICBSP y que murió en 1989 con solo 41 años -, se celebró en Beltsville, Maryland (EE. UU.) en 1990, y contó con la participación de 80 delegados procedentes de 17 países distintos. De acuerdo con lo que se ha dicho previamente, el programa científico se diversificó y se incluyeron ponencias sobre el almacenamiento del semen porcino refrigerado, la criopreservación espermática y la aplicación práctica de la inseminación artificial a nivel mundial. El encuentro sirvió, además, para estrechar la colaboración entre los participantes. A esta segunda conferencia le siguieron otras siete. La tercera conferencia tuvo lugar en Neustadt (Alemania) el 1995; la cuarta de nuevo en Beltsville, Maryland (EE. UU.) el 1999; la quinta en Doorweth (Países Bajos) el 2003, la sexta en Alliston, Guelph (Canadá) el 2007, dedicada a Polge que había muerto un año antes, la séptima en Bonn (Alemania) el 2011, y la octava en Champaign, Illinois (EE. UU.). Esta tradición de celebrar una conferencia en Europa y otra en América cambió en 2019, cuando la novena edición tuvo lugar, por primera vez, en Australia (Chateau Elan, The Hunter Valley, NSW), con la intención de atraer participantes de la región Asia-Pacífico.
